TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Tony Akins scored 28 points, including
20 in the second half, to lead Georgia Tech to an 86-78 win
Saturday over Florida State.
Akins, who hit six 3-point shots in the game, scored eight
points during a crucial 13-4 second-half run. The run came after
Florida State (11-16, 4-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored 15
consecutive points to narrow a Georgia Tech lead to 60-59.
Akins made four free throws and Luke Schenscher scored five
points in the final minute to clinch the game for Georgia Tech
(15-15, 7-9).
The Yellow Jackets have won five games in a row heading into
next weekend's ACC Tournament.
The Seminoles finished the regular season by losing nine of its
last 10 games.
Georgia Tech scored seven straight points to take its biggest
lead, 60-44, with 11:54 left. But Florida State's Monte Cummings
scored five points and the Seminoles hit two 3-point shots to go on
the 15-0 run.
Nigel Dixon led Florida State with 17 points and nine rebounds,
while Cummings scored 16.
Ed Nelson had 17 for Georgia Tech, while Schenscher, B.J. Elder
and Clarence Moore each added 10.
Georgia Tech used an 11-2 run at the end of the first half to
take a 38-29 halftime lead. Akins, Moore and Marvin Lewis each hit
3-point shots during the run, which came after Florida State tied
the game 27-27. |
