RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The top scoring team in the Atlantic Coast Conference was looking for anything to get away from the hounding defense thrown up by North Carolina State. Josh Powell and the Wolfpack clashed with a determined bunch in Carlos Boozer -- 22 points -- and the Blue Devils. Duke (No. 1 ESPN/USA Today, No. 2 AP) found it in Mike Dunleavy. Dunleavy scored 15 straight points in a 23-2 run to close the first half and Duke rolled over the Wolfpack 76-57 Sunday night. "It took something incredible like that to get that working margin because we were not playing that much more differently performance-wise than N.C. State," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We just had a kid who made separation for us." Duke (14-1, 3-1) beat N.C. State for the 11th straight time and 16th out of the last 17 to halt any thoughts that the defending national champions were vulnerable following their first loss a week ago. Dunleavy had 22 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in the opening 20 minutes -- outscoring the Wolfpack by one -- and finished with a career-high 27 points on 10-for-18 shooting. His previous best was 25 points against San Diego State two weeks ago. "We were real stagnant there for a while," Dunleavy said. "We just couldn't break it open and Jason (Williams) was out of the game for a little bit and I said, `I'm going to try and be a little bit more aggressive here.' I made a couple in a row inside the arc and I just got it going. After you make a few and a few after that it gets real easy." Carlos Boozer added 22 points for Duke. Josh Powell led the Wolfpack (12-4, 2-2) with 12 points. The Blue Devils fell from the nation's top ranking in the AP poll after a one-point loss at Florida State last Sunday, but rebounded with impressive wins over Georgia Tech and the Wolfpack while AP No. 1 Kansas lost to UCLA on Saturday. That combination could push the Blue Devils back to No. 1 in The Associated Press poll -- where they had been all season prior to the loss to the Seminoles. "We felt like we played a pretty good 30 minutes against Georgia Tech and we came out with a lot of energy, but we didn't play a full 40 and that's what we wanted to do tonight," Dunleavy said. "We really built on that. We were good for 39½. So, it's not yet perfect but we're on our way." N.C. State had won seven of its last eight, including road wins over Syracuse and Virginia, both Top Ten teams. Players didn't shake hands prior to the tip in the biggest ACC matchup to date as the Wolfpack crowd of 19,722 was anxious to see how far the program had come. N.C. State matched up with Duke for the opening 10 minutes, giving the Blue Devils some problems with its press and harassing Duke into poor shot selection. Then the roof caved in for the Wolfpack. After starting 6-for-11 from the field, the Wolfpack went close to nine minutes without a basket as Duke and Dunleavy took control. "We allowed ourselves to go down the fire escape instead of sticking with our game plan," Wolfpack coach Herb Sendek said. "Duke's defense really got us out of whack." Duke made four free throws as the decisive run started innocently enough. And two layups by Williams made it 30-19. Dunleavy then put on a shooting display Wolfpack fans won't soon forget. The 6-foot-9 forward made a 15-footer, an 18-footer, a shot in the lane and a 3-pointer in a span of 2:02 to cap a 17-0 spurt by the Blue Devils that took the rowdy crowd _ and the Wolfpack _ out of the game. Dunleavy made two more shots behind the arc -- each one deeper than the next -- over the final 38 seconds for 22 points. That was one more than the entire Wolfpack team as Duke led 45-21 at halftime. "Mike's performance is so incredible because the pace of the game puts pressure on a shooter," Krzyzewski said. "You almost expect something to be happening to you so you don't have full concentration. "That happened to both teams, but it didn't happen to Mike. It's not like he hit layups. It's not like they were playing horrible defense. The last one was about 26 feet." Powell's layup with 1:09 left in the half snapped N.C. State's scoring drought, but it was the first points scored by the Wolfpack frontcourt as N.C. State shot 31 percent and coughed it up 12 times. Duke maintained its big lead in the second half as Sendek got a technical foul with 14:42 left to add insult to a frustrating night for his team.
